Running a forum and being in control of all your users can be fun and I’m sure many people do it just for that power alone.
Here are some arguments for and against starting a forum.
Advantages to starting a forum
There has to be some advantages to starting a forum or people wouldn’t do it. Once a forum is setup and active, there is a great opportunity with advertising and marketing to a large audience. Income from AdSense and paid advertisers will be good if you forum is based around a good niche.
If your forum is about making money online then it will attract a type of user that is aware of adverts and as a result you will receive less clicks. If your forum is about a computer game for instance then the users are less likely to be aware of the cost of clicking adverts and invalid clicks etc resulting in more earnings.
If you start any new projects then you can advertise and get all your current users interested in your new one.
Disadvantages
A forum is a very hard thing to start. Setup can be easy and free if you have hosting just select a forum script and install. Then its about finding users and getting registrations as well as constant activity from users. This is a very hard thing to achieve so you have to target people with an interest in your forum to start with. Other ways to get members is by restricting information or piling non registered users pages with adverts. This way you get users registering for information or regular visitors doing so to remove the majority of adverts.
If the forum takes off and becomes popular then it can take a strain on server resources and begin to cost you more and more money to power it. However there should be a balance here, if there is a high number of users then this should result in more add clicks and earning for you to run the forum. This is not always the case so you may need good financial support. This is where the only benefit of a forum comes down to sharing knowledge and general discussions with other web users.
On a large forum you will no doubt need moderators to control spamming and invalid sign ups who also spam as well as taking care of regular users. This is particularly important if your forum is based on a controversial topic.
If you get some good reliable members, they may not appreciate you just leaving the forum one day with them knowing that you will not be continuing its running. So you need to be committed to keeping the forum going. The larger it is the harder it will be for you to leave, unless you sell it of course
.
So, Is It Worth It?
It can be a good thing to start a forum, noting that the disadvantages are longer than the opposed, however it is only something that I recommend if you have the time and money to finance one. I think you also need the right topic for your forum that has not been saturated.
